![]() ![]() We would pay Plemons to read the Starfleet Spacefleet manual. Seriously, Jesse Plemons’ Shatner impression is so lovingly wrought that it would bring a tear to Spock’s eye. The delightful sets, ridiculous scenarios, and hokey alien encounters would’ve been enough to thrill any Trekker, but the performances bring the tribute to the next level. While “Galaxy Quest” is the ultimate homage to “Star Trek” fandom, “USS Callister” delivers us a brilliant parody of the original series itself, interpreted through the psyche of an anti-social coder. “Black Mirror: USS Callister” Jonathan Prime “Black Mirror” can weave an intricate plot if it wants, but sometimes this kind of focus on one relationship leads to the most satisfying kind of story. And the overriding, conflicted nature of her life-salvaging purchase gives Hayley Atwell the chance to deliver one of the best performances in the run of the series. It’s not easy to imbue a robot with just the right amount of personality to seem both loving and frightening all at once, but it’s a divide that Domhnall Gleason manages to pull off. Proof that the show can do romance just as good as any darker human emotion, the unconventional love story between a woman and the replicated android version of her late husband is a consideration of what makes us human and what we are willing to sacrifice for our own version of happiness. While some of the most potent “Black Mirror” episodes focus on people trying to escape things outside of their control, this episode is proof that getting exactly what you want can be just as paralyzing. “Black Mirror” has always had a fraught relationship with social media, but it’s the way Brooker slips in some insidious cell phone surveillance thread into this story that, along with Chris’ unhinged outbursts, make this the only Season 5 episode to leave the audience with a lingering sense of dread. It’s an uncertain swirl of anger, regret, and doubt that even extends across a transatlantic satellite phone when Topher Grace’s Jack Dorsey-esque tech CEO enters the mix. Both Scott and Damson Idris (as Jaden, the hostage in this international negotiation) anchor the tension here, especially when the two are confined to a car in the middle of an empty field. So if there’s a problem with “Smithereens,” it’s that the tech-based motivation of a distressed rideshare driver Chris (Andrew Scott) seems shoehorned into an otherwise-gripping kidnapping tale. The best episodes of “Black Mirror” feel like they couldn’t exist as part of any other series. “Black Mirror: Smithereens” Stuart Hendry / Netflix (Also, this episode does have Hayek shouting “Paragraph A can suck my dick!” so that’s not for nothing, either.) Time will tell how potent this chapter ends up being outside the context of the ongoing WGA and SAG strikes, which should make for some illustrative future context. Like those, your enjoyment of this is almost entirely dependent on how well you respond to the one track it sets itself and stays on for almost its whole runtime, Salma Hayek-as-herself-subplot and some other trickery notwithstanding. ![]() This show has a growing tradition of episodes based around watching one person melt down as their entire perception of reality is shattered (see also: “Nosedive,” “Entire History of You”). In maybe the strongest “call coming from inside the house” episode of the show so far, Brooker and director Ally Pankiw turn their attention to Joan (Annie Murphy), whose life is inverted when she finds out a streaming series is recreating her life in real time. “Black Mirror: Joan Is Awful” ©Netflix/Courtesy Everett Collection It’s bleak enough to pacify the most masochistic technophobe, but ends with a parting message that offers the faintest bit of hope that the future isn’t as unconquerable as we might think. But what this episode truly delivers is an overwhelming sense of physical terror, the starkest example of characters wrestling with their own bodies - and even their own souls. With allusions to past installments and extensions of others, it’s the “Black Mirror” equivalent of a bonus track. Rolo Haynes (Douglas Hodge) is as good a narrator as he is an unreliable one, making for a tour guide through the show’s cemetery who delights in the twisted artifacts of his own creation. As a road-tripping visitor (Letitia Wright) stops into a gas station collection of technological curiosities, the accompanying trio of shorter stories make for a bizarre trip through the show’s self-contained history. “Black Mirror: Black Museum” Jonathan Prime / NetflixĪs gutsy a season finale that the show’s put forth so far, “Black Museum” is somehow both a love letter to the series and a massive grenade designed to blast it to smithereens. ![]() ![]() The child's tooth is wrapped in some animal fat and fed to the dog the dog then eats the tooth. In November 2016, Google transitioned its translating method to a system called neural machine translation. Moreover, the system automatically identifies foreign languages and translates speech without requiring individuals to tap the microphone button whenever speech translation is needed. It is able to scan text or a picture using the device and have it translated instantly. In May 2014, Google acquired Word Lens to improve the quality of visual and voice translation. As of February 2010, it was integrated into browsers such as Chrome and was able to pronounce the translated text, automatically recognize words in a picture and spot unfamiliar text and languages. In January 2010, Google introduced an Android app and iOS version in February 2011 to serve as a portable personal interpreter. Despite this, Google initially did not hire experts to resolve this limitation due to the ever-evolving nature of language. Since SMT uses predictive algorithms to translate text, it had poor grammatical accuracy. The input text had to be translated into English first before being translated into the selected language. Originally, Google Translate was released as a statistical machine translation service. It translates multiple forms of texts and media such as words, phrases and webpages. Google Translate is a web-based free-to-user translation service developed by Google in April 2006. It uses this broader context to help it figure out the most relevant translation, which it then rearranges and adjusts to be more like a human speaking with proper grammar". In November 2016, Google announced that Google Translate would switch to a neural machine translation engine – Google Neural Machine Translation (GNMT) – which translates "whole sentences at a time, rather than just piece by piece. Its accuracy, which has been criticized on several occasions, has been measured to vary greatly across languages. During a translation, it looks for patterns in millions of documents to help decide which words to choose and how to arrange them in the target language. Rather than translating languages directly, it first translates text to English and then pivots to the target language in most of the language combinations it posits in its grid, with a few exceptions including Catalan–Spanish. Launched in April 2006 as a statistical machine translation service, it used United Nations and European Parliament documents and transcripts to gather linguistic data. As of 2022, Google Translate supports 133 languages at various levels it claimed over 500 million total users as of April 2016, with more than 100 billion words translated daily, after the company stated in May 2013 that it served over 200 million people daily. It offers a website interface, a mobile app for Android and iOS, as well as an API that helps developers build browser extensions and software applications. Plenty of tension with zero buzz (strings are almost touching the frets), still sounds heavy when I want it to, and thinner strings - that's a winner for me. I decided to go with 10-48 on this guitar and it works great. I tune to drop C and D standard and typically use 10-52. I'm really enjoying having the ability to use lighter gauge strings with the longer scale length. I tend to use a lot of different picking techniques and this neck pickup is home sweet home for my ears. My favorite thing about it is the versatility - especially with the coil tap. Very warm with smooth transitions between notes. Neck Pickup - though I think the bridge pup is top notch, the neck pup is insane! It's the best sound I've ever had out of a neck pickup, ever. It sounds great while hybrid picking, which is something I've been work on a lot lately. On cleans it sounds like exactly what you'd want - a very defined and responsive pickup. Intonation was easy, and replacing strings has never been faster. The bridge is simple, but very stable and comfortable design. I find that cleans with stainless frets often feel a bit twangy, but the warmness added by the chambering does a perfect job of compensating and leveling it out to a warm, loud, and fast attack with plenty of sustain without needing too much vibrato, if any. The difference here is while this guitar may look like a showroom case queen, it roars like a demon while you maneuver over the fanned frets with almost no effort. In December 2020, The Face dubbed indie rock singer Beabadoobee "The Bubblegrunge Internet Sensation." This suggests the genre has overlapped with the so-called "5th-wave Emo," a genre name determined by multiple up-and-coming indie rock bands. Spotify, Bandcamp and Hype Machine have dedicated "Bubble Grunge" tags, featuring indie rock artists such as Charly Bliss, Hop Along, Snail Mail, Camp Trash, etc. That definition appears to have changed by streaming services over the following decade to cover indie rock bands that have energetic guitars and vocals and sweet lyrics and vocals.
